Jewish cemetery

The time-honoured Jewish cemetery in Osoblaha lies in the community center, 150 meters north from the square. It is surrounded by stone walls, including part of the original outer walls. This monument is opened to public.

The first mention of the Jewish cemetery in Osoblaha dates back to the 1570. There are 313 tombstones whereas the oldest one dates back to 1694. There is buried Meshullam Zalman, son of Isaac Marpurk, the Viennese refugee. On his tombstone is the glyptic date of his death in 5454 of the Jewish calendar, corresponding to 1694 AD. These Baroque tombstones in Osoblaha are unique in the Czech Republic. In a separate cemetery department, called the “Rabínský vršk” (Rabbil hill), rest the remains of local renowned scholars and many of excellent Jewish personalities who came to Osoblaha from other Silesian towns like Opava or Prudnik and as well as from Vienna because of extreme historical events.
